When pressing the clutch pedal, how light the feel is and how complete the disengagement is depends largely on the release bearing assembly. It is the only component in the clutch control system that combines both rotation and sliding-it must rotate at high speed with the diaphragm spring while moving back and forth axially, under harsh conditions. A substandard release bearing causes, at best, stiff or noisy pedal operation, and at worst, incomplete disengagement, gear grinding, or even burnt clutch plates.
